Does the gospel affect the way that you speak? I don’t mean that every word that comes out of your mouth should be about Jesus (although we should speak of Him a lot). What I mean by the gospel affecting our speech is that our words should be filled with the same grace that God has shown toward us. Does that describe you? What about how you respond when someone mistreats you or says something that you don’t like? Colossians 4:6 says “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”
When Jesus died on the cross for our sin, He gave us something that we didn’t deserve. None of us measure up to His standard on our own merit. God would have been right and just if He had sent us all to hell. But instead, He actually stood in our place of punishment so that we might have the opportunity to live. That is grace! As followers of Jesus, our whole life should reflect that same gospel of the grace of God. This includes the way that we speak (whether in person or on social media). When you are offended or hurt, don’t retaliate, but instead give people what they don’t deserve through your gracious speech.
