As we have been exploring Romans chapter 12 recently at Coffee & Scripture, we discussed the command to “not be conformed to this world” (Romans 12:2). It is very easy to conform to those around you, even in ways that you may not realize. For college students, apathy seems to be a prevalent issue in our day on many campuses (especially at URI). Do you see that indifference, lack of concern, or lack of enthusiasm in your life? You might not recognize it unless you have spent time on another campus or in a different cultural environment. You just assume that this is the college lifestyle because it is what you see around you. It’s not only the things of God that students are apathetic toward. Apathy certainly goes into many parts of life here.
Romans 12:11 says, “Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.” In other words, as one commentator explained, “Whatever is worth doing in the Christian life is valuable enough to be done with enthusiasm and care.” A Christian should be excited to spend time in God’s Word, prayer, sharing the faith, and being in fellowship with other believers. The things of God are worth devoting our passion and focus toward.
What should we do to rid ourselves of apathy? It begins with faith. If you don’t believe, then you obviously won’t be passionate about God. But for a Christian, you must constantly “be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). In renewing our mind, we are being reminded of who God is and what He has done for us. When we remember how gracious God has been to us, and the price that He paid for us on the cross, how could we possibly continue in apathy? How could we possibly be indifferent to Jesus? Renewing our mind should cause us to turn from the ways that we have become like the world, and turn back to Christ. Secondly, make sure that you are surrounding yourself with Christians who are serious about following Jesus. We all need Christian community. RCF is here to challenge you to live a life that is wholeheartedly devoted to Jesus. We would love for you to join us this week!
